3 fall colour palettes

Fall marks the beginning of the Holiday Season! A time for crisp air, crunchy leaves, hot soups, and lots of sourdough!

While I love my hardier meals this time of the year, food may just take the back seat when it comes to decorating. The pumpkins and wreaths, candles and works of art change the vibe of a home into a place that’s a little more cozy and wonderful. New textures get brought into the living spaces and the days are shorter, a new atmosphere is born.

And so we decorate!

There are a few different fall color palettes that really get me going. After thinking about the range of decorating options for fall, of course nothing is off limits. It all really comes down to your home, what brings you the most joy and gives you that feeling of fall you’re looking for. As always this is just me and my interpretation as I can’t help myself but to think about things like fall, decorating, and apple cider donuts! That being said, to spice things up a little bit, I thought it would be fun to narrow these different décor styles into three different categories. The categories are as follows; The Classic, The Funky, and The Farm.

How to do The Classic:

When I close my eyes and picture the perfect fall setting it is full of pumpkins, leaves, and pinecones. I see candles, cozy blankets, deep colors like burnt oranges, browns, brass, and scarlet reds.

I think of the classic look as inviting the outside elements inside. Things like branches and loose leaves make for great accents and center pieces throughout the home. These pieces also make great accents to candles and lighting. Utilizing the classic orange pumpkin on the porch and around the house, maybe the fireplace or along a staircase. Adding in some straw for extra detail and texture is always fun. Draping blankets over loveseats and the couch and adding in a basket full of fleece along with some extra pillows to really cozy things up. Some long candlesticks on a table, mantle, or buffet is dreamy and adorable - especially if paired with some sweet mini pumpkins.

Overall the Classic Fall feeling is all about the woods and helping the outside elements marry the warmth of the home. There are so many fun and creative ways to execute this, and defining the color palette is a great place to start.

How To Do The Funky:

When I close my eyes and picture the funky fall home I see various sizes of pumpkins in various colors. There are touches of bright oranges, peaches, blues, greens, pinks, and turquoise.

The funky look is a more colorful spin on the classic fall. I think the funky fall décor has a bit of both the classic and the farm in terms of elements, but the color palette is really what sets it apart. We still have elements of the pumpkins and blankets but they might be a little bit extra. Think the bright beautiful multi-color pumpkins that almost have a pastel vibe to them. Let the blankets be a little bigger and shaggier than one may normally think of. This fall home is extra cozy, extra eclectic, with all the fun-yet tasteful, pops of color brought to you by nature.

The funky fall home is not about things clashing. This style is still very cohesive and beautiful it just embodies more of the artistic colors drawn from nature than the classic and the farm. This would be a fun excercise to help train your eye to see more than the typical colors around you. Notice many paintings have layers of color and each layer carries a different opacity (or load) of color within it. While looking at something may seem blue or green when you open yourself up to the deeper notes you will notice the way light changes or enhacnes the colors bouncing off an object. You will see that there is no pure blue or green, but undertones of peach and yellow.

That is the mindset of the Funky Fall Home. It is the depth and the layering of color and comfort that will draw everyone into your home. This home feels good and right but no one can quite put their finger on it.

How To Do The Farm:

When I close my eyes and picture the farm I see classic white pumpkins and rustic burlap finishes. There are touches of brown, white, black, plenty of flannel and raw wood accents.

Just like the classic fall style, with the farm we will bring elements of the farm life into the home while jazzing them up with fun and bright fall elements. Still going to nature and taking things like branches, pinecones, pumpkins and hay but we will pair them up with metals and glass jars.

Blankets will be chunky and knitted and most of the color palette will feel more neutral with pops of oranges throughout. Cinnamon sticks and candles will accent the tables and the tablespace will be grand and festive while everything else remains sturdy and eclectic. Pillows will welcome every back and baskets line the furniture of the home. It is warm, it is inviting, and it is all the fall feels because of the small intentional moments placed all throughout the home.

I wrote this little bit to expand the horizon on what is possible in terms of color palettes and decorating throughout the fall season. I know it’s super easy to bypass decorating for fall once Thanksgiving actually hits because we rush on to Christmas. The two holidays being so close together makes it hard to really enjoy the warmth and fun that comes from decorating for each. But maybe finding a wonderful color palette for your style and home this fall you will set up and enjoy what you’ve created until Thanksgiving night!
